AL MAMOURA CUP (Thoroughbred Handicap Class 2 105 & below)

CRAFTED (Shamardal x Designed) put behind a couple of disappointing finishes to emerge a winner for Ibrahim Al Malki in a thrilling Thursday finale. After a win in January the 6yo had failed to crack the frame but on Thursday, jockey Adnan Hawa guided the gelding to his eight career victory, edging out Mohammed Jassim Ghazali trained ITORIO (Oratorio x Image Of), ridden by Tadgh O’Shea in the colours of last year’s Leading Owner Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari, at the post by a short head. Another Al Malki ward made it to the top three with Saleem Golam guiding Abdullah Hassan Ali Abdulmalik owned BEACH SAMBA (Lope De Verga x Braziliz) to the frame.

PLEIADES (Galileo x Angara) had improved a lot this season, picking up a second place in January before taking a Handicap win over a mile. On Thursday, Gerald Avranche, riding in the colours of Hamad Bin Abdulrahman Bin Hamad Al Attiya, rode the 5yo to his second straight victory for trainer Wasim Mohammed. After staying midfield for the bulk of the race, Pleiades went up front on the home stretch before pulling away to win by three lengths, ahead of Zuhair Mohsen's ward SHAHBAR (Champs Elysees x Dahama) and Julian Smart's SPIRIT OF QATAR (Monsun x Sandy Girl) respectively.

A confident ride by Abdulla Faisal saw Khalid Al Nuaimi’s PARKES AND RIDE (Pivotal x Kaabari) pick up his second career win in the mile long run. Hamad Al Jehani trained Papa Luigi had set the pace up front under Anas Al Seyabi but was quickly overwhelmed once on the home straight by Ibrahim Al Malki’s ZAINAT (Masterofthehorse x Think Fast), Zuhair Mohsen’s RIJM (New Approach x Astorg) and Julian Smart’s Ras Abrouq. However, once Faisal let his 4yo partner go, the gelding went past half the field to edge out Gerald Avranche’s ount Zainat by a neck for the win, while Marvin Suerland helmed Rijm to third.

For the second straight race, an Umm Qarn filly, trained by Alban de Mieulle, was ridden to victory by Jean Baptiste Hamel, with SAMAA (Majd Al Arab x Noorah) registering her second win in Qatar in a thrilling finish in the mile long run. Samaa, who had made a successful debut in Qatar in November, edged out early leader CAID DE L’ARDUS (Mahabb x Jelfa De L'Ardus), with Richard Mullen astride, 50m out to go past the post half a length ahead of Jassim Mohammed Ghazali’s ward. Al Jeryan Stud’s MAJDAN (Majd Al Arab x Gelna), trained by Hadi Al Ramzani, was ridden to third by Alberto Sanna.

Umm Qarn’s WAQAAR (Burning Sand x Al Hanoof) showed some amazing stamina to lead the mile long run from pillar to post to shed her maiden status. Ridden by Jean Baptiste Hamel, the 4yo had moved into the lead early on and showed some clean pair of heels, even as another filly Djumana KB, trained by Mohammed Al Ramzani and ridden by Tomas Lukasek, attempted a chase. H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani owned MOHSSN (Almas x Nisaee) too joined the pursuit under Richard Mullen but eventually to no avail. Mohssn, however, did edge out DJUMANA KB (AF AlBahar x Djoulai) by a little under a length for a second place finish.

Jassim Mohammed Ghazali’s charge, TAQARUB (Al Mudaffar x Opale Du Croate), put on display some blistering pace in the final straight to shed his maiden status over a mile on Thursday. On his second career outing, Taqarub, Almotasem Al Balushi astride, tracked early leader Qimmat Al Majd, before surging forward coming off the final bend and creating a massive advantage of seven lengths going past the post. Zuhair Mohsen’s ward LAITH (Amer x Soudjel) and Mohammed Al Sheeb’s AL RAAD (Hafid Du Bac x Wujdan) completed the podium under Saleem Golam and Kelly Harrison respectively.

Salem Al Hajri’s AL HAZAM (Duke Of Marmalade x Buck Aspen) had shown promise over longer trips, finishing third twice since January. Dropping back in trip did the trick as Xavier Ziani rode the 4yo to his first career win, holding well against a fast closing DRAW SWORDS (Dansili x Sacred Shield), who made his Qatar debut following arrival from Britain. Faleh Bughanaim had the Hamad Al Jehani ward pick up speed on the home straight but ran out of track falling short by a short head. Zuhair Mohsen’s AL MIKDAM (Myboycharlie x Kilfarasy) was third under Marvin Suerland.

AL AYYAR (Domestic Fund x Ishrah) had not shown any improvement he was expected to after a third place finish in November. That was until Thursday when Majed Seifeddine’s charge registered a narrow win under Adnan Hawa to shed his maiden status. The win, which came at the 4yo’s fifth attempt, saw the colt edge out QUEEN MAOUYA (Abide With Me x Jumaana), ridden by Rashid Al Marri, by a neck while Faleh Bughanaim helmed Mohammed Hamad Al Attiya trained Al Jazeera (Mount Nelson x Princess Ellis) to a third place finish.

Moving down in trip seemed to have worked well for Mohammed Jassim Ghazali trained SAAB AL MANAL (Whipper x New Largue), who won the day’s opener over seven furlongs on Thursday. Helmed by Almotasem Al Balushi, the 5yo narrowly won the fixture to shed his maiden status, with Saleem Golam guiding Ibrahim Al Malki saddled MISTER LAL (Abide With Me x Adventuress) to the gelding second straight runner up finish, having repeated the result from his debut a week ago. Stefano Ibido trained ZURICH BU THAILA (Lawman x Oh Smarty Girl) completed the top three under Gerald Avranche.
