9 March 2017

MUSHEIREB CUP (Thoroughbred classified stakes (class 3) rated 90 & below)

A year after he last tasted victory, Mohammed Jassim Ghazali trained STEVIE'S WONDER (Art Connoisseur x Our Jo Jo) was led in as the winner once again as Harry Bentley guided the 5yo to victory in the 2000m feature on turf at QREC on Thursday. Bentley had Stevie's Wonder run on the outside even as Under The Radar led for the bulk of the race with JP Guillambert at the helm. Coming on to the home stretch, Stevie's Wonder had little trouble taking the lead but the rest of the field began chase, especially Ahmed Kobeissi's HALL OF MIRRORS (Duke Of Marmalade x Apache Dream), who kept closing the gap under Adnan Hawa, but ran out of track and had to settle for second. Stefano Ibido's ward HILLAL (Whipper x Hill of Grace) was ridden to third by Alberto Sanna in the silks of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Julian Smart’s SHE’RIS (Mared Al Sahra x Kerbelle Du Loup) notched up his second career victory under a confident ride by Alberto Sanna over a mile. The HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani owned colt now has nine straight top five finishes but a victory had stayed elusive since his winning debut in December 2015. On Thursday, Sanna had his mount track early leader CAID DE L’ARDUS (Mahabb x Jelfa De L'Ardus), ridden by Harry Bentley for trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali, before upping the pace coming off the final bend and then slowly clawing his way ahead for a half a length victory. MESSINE DE SINUHE (Njewman x Amidou Douzaia) completed the top three under Pierantonio Convertino’s ride.

Injaaz Stud’s AL JAMAAHEER (Hockney x Inthemoodforlove) bounced back from an 11th place finish during HH The Emir’s Sword weekend with a win in a seven furlong run. Pierantonio Convertino had kept his mount on the rails, even as Abrar and Waeed set the pace up front. As the action heated up on the home stretch, Al Jamaaheer took the inside line to go up front, while Harry Bentley had MURAQABAH (Great Journey x Magic Kaldoun) pick up the pace. However the former held on for his fourth career win, while Xavier Ziani helmed Khalid Al Nuaimi’s AMMON (Sleeping Indian x Farmers Wish) to third place.

Darren Williams rode AL NEHAYY (Mastercraftsman x Yacht Woman) to the colt’s first victory in almost a year with Hadi Al Ramzani’s ward winning the 1850 race in a thrilling finish. HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani owned RAS ABROUQ (Malibu Moon x Bashful Bertie) came closest to adding a second victory to his tally, falling a neck short at the post, under Marco Monteriso’s ride. Julian Smart trained colt beat Ibrahim Al Malki’s ZAINAT (Masterofthehorse x Think Fast) for the second spot.

Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim registered his second victory this season when he guided Al Shaqab Racing’s THARB (Lonhro x Pacific Indy) to a comfortable victory in a six furlong sprint. Trained by Ibrahim Al Malki, the distance was the gelding’s shortest in his stint in Qatar so far, and he did well to go past the post first, while Abdelaziz Al Qathiri schooled STOLEN STORY (Kodiac x Mirwara), Andrea Fele astride, came closest to winning for the first time since February 2016, finishing ahead of Zuhair Mohsen’s ward FOUNDER (Zamindar x Never Fade), helmed by Adnan Hawa.

Mohammed Hussain trained TAHRI BAHA (Mared Al Sahra x Zamara) registered his first career victory on his fifth attempt in Qatar this season. Ridden by Alberto Sanna in the seven furlong race on turf, Dhafi Al Ardi Al Marri owned 4yo was in a league of his own, beating the competition by five lengths. Mohammed Al Ramzani schooled M.J LATTAM (AF AlBahar x Menwat Al Jazeera) finished runner-up three and a half lengths ahead of Alban de Mieulle’s charge MAJIDAH (Khattaf x Daniah).

Harry Bentley’s first win of the day was with Mohammed Jassim Ghazali’s ward LAGHAM (Mahabb x Al Ababeel) in the seven furlong run. The Sheail Bin Khalifa Al Kuwari owned colt had last run in HH The Emir’s Silver Sword and had finished midfield against a high quality opposition. On Thursday, the 4yo shed his maiden status finishing a little over a length ahead of Julian Smart’s FAZAN (Nizam x Ultafa Al Maury), who split Ghazali’s two wards, with JP Guillambert-ridden MARJAN (Nizam x Abajdara D'Aroco) edged out to third by a neck.

Running over a mile for the first time in Qatar, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali trained KLAREMOUNT (Kodiac x Hannah Greeley) shed his maiden status. In his last outing two weeks ago, the Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mahmood owned colt was well beaten, but on Thursday, under Marvin Suerland’s ride, the bay colt did enough to edge out AL MURAQABAH (Duke Of Marmalade x Marina Ellen), trained by Ghazali’s son Mohammed, by half a length. The filly, running the distance for the first time in her short career, edged out Ibrahim Al Malki schooled DARIGA (Medicean x Danelissima).
