ACROBATE, AL LUSAIL win Al Karana Cup, Al Jassasiya Cup

Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi had a winner in the 2017-2018 season’s last feature too, taking his count to four on the day. With JP Guillambert in the saddle, Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s ACROBATE (Oasis Dream x Balladeuse) came out of Gate 1 and stayed on the rails behind Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s Topsy Turvy for the bulk of the race. Once the action got on to the home straight in the mile long run, Acrobate slowly edged past the early leader a furlong out and then

held on to win by a length at the line. Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani trained VITALLY IMPORTANT (Pivotal x Kirkinola) had stayed away from the front but Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim had the 8yo take the inside line on the home straight and did enough to finish second, edging out Zuhair Mohsen Zuhair Maki trained BLUEBEARD (Dansili x Arabesque), with Gerald Avranche astride, to third.

Mohammed Bin Hamad Khalifa Al Attiyah’s AL LUSAIL (Footstepsinthesand x Gooey) continued with his run of top three results when Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim raced Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani’s ward to his third victory this season. Al Lusail had a C&D victory in March, which he followed it up with a third

place over longer trip earlier this month. On Thursday, in the seven furlong run, Al Lusail came up alongside the leaders in the last furlong and then surged forward to take a fine win, beating half brother FOOTPRINTINTHESAND (Footstepsinthesand x Adventures), ridden by Saleem Golam for Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi, by two lengths and three quarters. Yousef Ben Taher Mehaoued trained MONTASER (Domestic Fund x My Sweet Natalie) was third under Jean Baptiste Hamel.

In a thrilling finish, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained GALACTIC PRINCE (Dubawi x Opera Gal) picked up his third win from five runs in Qatar when Marc Lerner helmed the gelding to a win over a mile and a half. The 4yo had started his time in Qatar with a fourth place finish in a 1700m run early in March. However, he came into his own over longer distances and on turf, picking up two wins and a runner up finish last time round. On Thursday, Lerner did well to negotiate traffic coming on to the home straight and then the duo jostled for the lead with Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi’s HALL OF MIRRORS (Duke of Marmalade x Apache Dream) on the inside, with Galactic Prince take a short head win at the line. Deborah Amanda Clare Mountain’s QUELINDO (Aussie Rules x Quintana), winner of a Group 1 earlier this month, made it to third under Carlo Fiocchi.

THOROUGHBREDS (Fillies & Mares) (Class 3)

Injaaz Stud’s WAYSIDE FLOWER (Shamardal x Umseyat) bounced back from a few wayward performances to register her third win this season. After starting the season on a promising note, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s ward picked up three wins before a few disappointing finishes. However, on Thursday, the 4yo did well under Jean Baptiste Hamel to beat Osama Omer Al Dafea’s HARRY’S DANCER (Kodiac x Dance On) by a length. Another Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi ward, HILLSIDE DREAM (Dream Ahead x Knapton Hill) completed the top three under Marc Lerner.

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s DEEBAJ (Amer x Obe De Ghazal) had shown promise with in-frame finishes early on. But the filly finished the season on a high with a hat-trick of wins, topping the mile long run with a blistering pace. Marc Lerner timed his move perfectly as he got Deebaj moving on the outside as DIESE (General x Divana) jostled for the advantage with ARBED (Mared Al Sahra x Tahadi) and Abercrombie on the home straight. However, Deebaj’s turn of foot was enough to see him through to the line as Faleh Bughanaim guided Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle trained Diese to second place, narrowly ahead of Hossin Mohammad Ashour-trained Arbed, ridden by Jean Baptiste Hamel.

THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4) (85 & below)

In a fast paced finish, Injaaz Stud’s Third Order (Hat Trick x Fifth Commandment), who had so far only shown capabilities on dirt, won for the first time this season. Ridden by Tadgh O’Shea, Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim’s ward had stayed away from the front early on in the race, when Mind of Madness set the pace under Khadija Abdulwahed. On the home straight, Mind of Madness held a sizeable lead but his run weakened, and with a furlong to go, Third Order and Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s ward Perigee (Cacique x Purissima), under JP Guillambert, surged forward on the outside. Eventually, Third Order picked up a victory by a quarter of a length over Perigee, while Faleh Bughanaim helmed Deborah Amanda Clare Mountain’s French Encore (Showcasing x French Connexion) to third.

Despite carrying the maximum weight, Mohammed Abdulla Al Moadhadi’s SAAR (Footstepsinthesand x Carahill) led a one-two for trainer Zuhair Mohsen Zuhair Maki in the mile long run. The gelding had put in some nice efforts in the last few races, finishing in the frame for three straight races coming into this race. On Thursday, Gerald Avranche had the 4yo track early leader and stablemate AL WATAN (Abide With Me x Watneya), helmed by Tadgh O’Shea, before making the move in the final furlong and eventually winning by a length. Tomas Lukasek guided Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani trained LATAMAH (Pivotal x Poseidon’s Bride) to a third place finish.

Al Shahania Stud’s E’ZAAZ (Amer x Naama ASF) had only once finished outside the frame this season and Pierre Jehan Andre Deymonaz’s ward kept that record intact as Stephan Ladjadj rode the colt to his second victory this season. In the six furlong sprint, E’zaaz, who had shed his maiden status over a mile last time round, was a willing partner on the straight as he went past the post with almost six lengths to spare. Hassan Ali Hassan Al Matwi’s JALWA AL JAZEERA (Majd Al Arab x Sarah De Faust) was second under Saleem Golam, while Osama Omer Al Dafea’s SHMOOS (Amer x Ba’Scherit) was ridden to third by Almotasem Al Balushi.

Zuhair Mohsen Zuhair Maki’s first winner of the day was AL MIKDAM (Myboycharlie x Kilfarasy) in the mile long maiden. Saeed Mohammed Shafi Al Shafi’s colt had finished in the frame seven times out of nine races this season. On Thursday, under Gerald Avranche, the 4yo did enough to beat the competition by a length at the line with Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained ISTIBDAD (Excelebration x Paper Profits) finishing second, the colt’s best finish since making the move to Qatar earlier this year. Hamad Ahmed Al Malki Al Jehani schooled FLOWER FESTIVAL (Dubawi x Folk Opera) completed the top three under Stephan Ladjadj.
