A year after finishing third in the race, Al Ghazali Stud’s AJS WATHANAN (Amer x Mangaline Du Loup) made amends to win the AL RUWAIS CUP (PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP Rated 90 & Below) on Wednesday on Al Rayyan Park turf. The victory was the first on the day for trainer Gassim Mohammad Ghazali but the Champion Trainer’s third feature win from this season’s three race meetings. In the 1900m run, Anas Al Seyabi helmed the 7yo to a fantastic six and a half length victory as the gelding went past the post ahead of Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s FUWAIRAT (Amer x Sakina De Faust) while Olivier Materne’s DIESE (General x Divana) rounded up the top three.
After a string of forgettable results to end the previous season, Abdullah Hassan Ali Abdumalik’s TECHNICOLOUR (Dubawi x Many Colours) opened the new season with a promising run in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (70-90). With Ryan Curatolo in the saddle for trainer Deborah Amanda Clare Mountain, the 6yo beat a strong field in the 1800m race to win for the fourth time in his career. The gelding made full use of a lighter weight taking the victory with one and a half lengths to spare.
Champion Jockey Harry Bentley rode his first winner of the season, which was also the fourth winner on the day for Mohammed Gassim Ghazali, in the LOCAL THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (80 & below) on Wednesday. Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s TILAL (Helmet x Last Rhapsody) was being ridden for the first time by the Englishman and the duo did well to win the six furlong sprint comfortably, beating Anas Al Seyabi ridden Admiral by two lengths and three quarters at the post.
After 23 winless starts, Hassan Ali Hassan Al Matwi’s LOLITA DU PANJSHIR (Majd Al Arab x Farah Du Panjshir) was back in the winner’s circle for the third time. In the PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (75 & below), Eduardo Pedroza was in the saddle of the 7yo and the duo seemed to get it right as they went past the post with five and a half lengths to spare as Meteb Ali Al Marri, also riding in Al Matwi colours, guided Nomas Al Shajaa to runner up spot.
Qatari rider Abdulaziz Jaber Dharman rode his first career winner on Wednesday when he guided Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s WARSAAN (Oasis Dream x Tanfidh) to a huge victory in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (QATARI RIDERS ONLY) (75 & below). Mohammed Gassim Ghazali schooled gelding had not tasted victory around Al Rayyan Park so far, having won at Newmarket in May last year. On Wednesday, the 4yo won by 11 lengths on dirt.
Injaaz Stud’s EBAADY (TM Fred Texas x Kerjam) shed his maiden status on his fourth outing around the Al Rayyan Park on Wednesday. The 5yo, ridden by JP Guillambert for trainer Mohammed Gassim Ghazali, had finished fifth on the opening day of the current season a week ago, and made his way into the winner’s circle with a fantastic win, beating the rivals by four and a quarter lengths to spare in the 1700m PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE.
Switching surfaces seemed to work for Hassan Ali Alabdulmalik’s EX MISS (Excelebration x Miss Starlight) after the filly bounced back from a forgettable 14th place finish on her first and previous outing in March with a smashing victory in the THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (Class 6). On Wednesday, running over 1700m on dirt, Ryan Curatolo helmed the 3yo to a six and a half length victory.
Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s WISHAH (Majd Al Arab x Al Etlalah) followed up a C&D third place finish with a fine win in the day’s opening race to shed her maiden status in the PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE (Fillies & Mares). In the six furlong sprint, with JP Guillambert in the saddle, the Mohammed Gassim Ghazali charge beat Saleh Salem Al Marri ridden Alanoud by one and a half lengths at the post.
