In the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, LUCKY LYCRA notched her first black type win in the Prix Joubert at Maisons-Laffitte on Wednesday 4 September 2019. In a slow run race over 2,800m, although somewhat keen in the hands of jockey François-Xavier Bertras, the daughter of OLYMPIC GLORY took the lead in the early stages. Settling once in the turn, the three-year-old Chestnut filly maintained her lead comfortably, with the other Al Shaqab representative, BLETILLA, in second. Once accelerating in the straight, LUCKY LYCRA came under pressure from PALOMBA, who, snatching the reins from her jockey, snaked her head over and bit Bertras on the elbow once upsides! Despite this very unusual mishap, the Francois Rohaut-trained LUCKY LYCRA held on to win the listed race for three-year-old fillies by a length, scoring her first stakes win. The Wertheimer & Frere-owned and Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained PALOMBA was second under Maxime Guyon. The Al Shaqab Racing-owned and Pia Brandt-trained BLETILLA was one and a quarter lengths behind in third under Michael Barzolona.
LUCKY LYCRA is from the first crop by the Al Shaqab stallion OLYMPIC GLORY and is trained in Pau, France, by François Rohaut. She was coming here off a third place in a listed race over a mile and a half at Vichy, France and appreciated the step up in trip in Prix Joubert.
“She has a big action and a lot of heart” said Al Shaqab Racing representative Rupert Pritchard-Gordon commenting on LUCKY LYCRA’s win, “She wants to run and she’s tough! She showed her attitude when winning her maiden at Fontainebleau and then again when she ran against colts at Vichy. She’s comfortable on good ground. We will have to discuss with her trainer as to her next steps. She’s not currently entered in the Qatar Prix Chaudenay (Gr2), but she could take her chance in the race depending on the opposition.”
