Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred two-year-old colt DAHIYA (Invincible Spirit) broke his maiden, second time up, in the Prix Irish River, a maiden, at Deauville on Saturday, 1 August, at the first weekend of the annual August meeting in Normandy which features a month of top-class racing. He had finished fourth on his debut at Chantilly a fortnight ago. DAHIYA was drawn on the inside in this 1,200-metre race on the straight track under jockey Vincent Cheminaud. He raced in the middle of the pack with plenty of pace in the race. He hit the front 100 metres from the line and, with apparent ease, held off Rapido Presto (Pedro The Great), who was running strongly on his outside. The official distance was a short head. DAHIYA is trained by the French maestro André Fabre in Chantilly.

Cheminaud commented after the race, “He is still a baby, but he can certainly jump! He was caught for speed on his debut and I thought he was more mature in his race today. He needed the run to bring him on. He’s definitely an improving horse and he hasn’t yet shown all he is capable of. I expect big things from him!”

DAHIYA is out of JADHABA, a daughter of GALILEO who ran just three times before injury cut her career short. She nonetheless counts two wins and a third place in the Group 3 Prix Penelope in her race record. She also ran in the Al Shaqab racing silks.
