Qatar Racing Limited enjoyed their second 2-year-old debut winner in as many hours on Friday, 6 September 2019, when, following on from HEART REEF’s success at Haydock, ENEMY made an eye-catching debut at Ascot. The colt, who is a half-brother to Classic winner CHIQUITA and G2 Ribbesdale Stakes heroine MAGIC WAND, won this 7-furlong Charbonnel Et Walker British EBF Maiden Stakes by a neck from the once-raced LAW OF PEACE. Trained by John Gosden, ENEMY was slightly sluggish away and sat quietly until 3 furlongs out when he progressed through the field, who were coming down the centre of the track. Qatar Racing Limited’s retained jockey Oisin Murphy gave him a perfect ride, tracking the leaders until in the final furlong when he came up to join LAW OF PEACE and together they pulled clear of the pack. ENEMY eventually won comfortably despite the narrow finishing margin. The Charlie Appleby-trained and William Buick-ridden LAW OF PEACE was second. The Sir Evelyn De Rothschild-owned and Sir Michael Stoute-trained CRYSTAL PEGASUS was further four lenghts behind in third under Ryan Moore.
ENEMY looks an exciting prospect for the future. “I didn’t have to touch him at all with the stick”, commented Oisin Murphy after the race, “He seems to have a nice future and this is a great starting point. He could stay at 7-furlongs, or go up to a mile. He was travelling sweetly and I felt that he’d win the whole way through the race.”
ENEMY is owned in partnership between Qatar Racing Limited and Lady Chryss O’Reilly. By first season sire MUHAARAR out of the top-class mare PRUDENZIA. He was bought at the Arqana August Yearling Sale from Écurie des Monceaux.
