His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani’s Mashael, won her first Listed race when the three-year-old bay filly of DUBAWI landed the Prix Charles Laffitte at Compiègne, France on Monday 7 October. Well placed on the rail by jockey Vincent Cheminaud, The Andre Fabre-trained Mashael pulled clear with ease in the closing stages to win the the 2000m Listed race for three-year-old fillies by four lengths. The Michael Perlman-owned and Michael Bell-trained English raider, BIGHEARTED, was the runner-up under Noble Cameron. The Écurie D’authuit/Écurie De Montlahuc-owned and Francis-Henri Graffard-trained SAMOTHRACE was further two lengths behind in third under Christophe Soumillon.
“She showed a lot of promise in her early races, and she’s improved a lot in the second half of the year”, said Rupert Pritchard-Gordon, representing AL Shaqab Racing, “She’s a big strong filly who’s only developing into herself now. We will now discuss with His Excellency Sheikh Joaan and Khalifa Al Attiyah as well as her trainer about whether she stays in training next year.”
MASHAEL is still relatively unexposed, having won her maiden on third time of asking this summer. Bred by Al Shaqab Racing, she is by the champion sire DUBAWI, and her dam is a sister to Classic winner Was (GALILEO) and Al Naamah (GALILEO), a multiple Group placed filly, also for Al Shaqab Racing.
