The His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned and bred three-year-old colt QARASU justified favouritism with an emphatic win in the Energy Check Handicap (Division 1) at Newbury on Saturday, 17 August 2019.

Coming from a wide draw, QARASU broke well to race up in third position just behind the leaders. Slightly keen in the early stages, he then settled into his rhythm in this 1m2f race, waiting patiently to come with his run late in the straight. He showed a smart turn of foot to take up the lead and, despite wandering under jockey Jason Watson once in the front, win comfortably by four lengths. The Horse Watchers-owned and Michael Appleby-trained SPUTNIK PLANUM was the runner-up and was ridden by P J McDonald. The Hugo Palmer-trained and James Doyle-ridden CARAVN OF HOPE was third.

QARASU is trained by Roger Charlton and is lightly raced having run just once at the age of 2 for a second place, also at Newbury. From four starts at the age of 3, he has now won twice, both times on soft ground, finishing placed on both of his other lifetime starts, confirming his smart form.
