ITORIO sprints to Ain Khaled Cup victory


In some top class Thorougbhreds sprint action, Mohammed Nasser Al Naimi’s ITORIO (Oratorio x Image Of) was back in the winner’s circle after a gap of almost two years in the AIN KHALED CUP, Thursday’s turf feature at the Al Rayyan Park. Tomas Lukasek helmed the Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani trained 7yo to a thrilling six furlong sprint victory, edging out Abdulaziz Ali Al Kathiri’s CRISTOFANO ALLORI (Shamardal x Perfect Touch), ridden by Stephan Ladjadj by a quarter of a length. Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained BLACK GRANITE (Dark Angel x Glisten) completed the top three under Harry Bentley.

Al Shaqab Racing’s AL WALID (Dahess x Al Sarwa) has only impressed since his arrival from France, including a fifth place in the million dollar Purebred Arabian feature during the HH The Amir Sword Festival last month. On Thursday, Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s charge registered a fine two lengths and three quarters victory under Ronan Thomas, beating Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained Spaghetti at the post in the 2200m PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS.

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s FESTIVE (Literato x Path Of Life) led a one-two for trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi in as the filly topped the THOROUGHBRED CONDITIONS (Fillies & Mares) (Class 2). In the seven furlong run, with JP Guillambert as her partner, the 5yo beat Injaaz Stud’s Wayside Flower, who had won the last time the two of them took the field at Al Rayyan Park. On Thursday, Festive won with a length and a quarter to spare for her second career win.


After a string of near misses this season, Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani schooled AL LUSAIL (Footstepsinthesand x Gooey) finally entered the winner’s circle with Ronan Thomas in the saddle for the first time for the 5yo. The Al Jeryan Stud colt edged out the favourite, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained Mosayter, ridden by Harry Bentley, by three quarters of a length in the seven furlong LOCAL THOROUGHBRED CONDITIONS.

A drop in class saw Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s ALIGNEMENT (Pivotal x Soldata) register his first victory in Qatar. The gelding, saddled by Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi, was impressive in France but had not hit the mark since his move to Qatar. On Thursday, however, the 6yo edged out Derby hero Full Moon by a short head in the 2000m THOROUGHBRED CONDITIONS (Class 2) with champion jockey Harry Bentley riding his 48th winner of the season.

The oldest contender in the field, Al Thumama Racing’s QASSY (Mared Al Sahra x The Write Stuff), raced to his first win since November 2017. Mohammed Hussain Afroz trained 9yo beat some quality opposition, many of them rated more than 100, as Jimmy Quinn guided him to a one and a half length victory in the mile long PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (90 & above). The miler saw the horse make full use of the weight advantage to beat Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi saddled Ateej at the post.

Mohamed Abdulla Abdulmalik’s WAR KING (Paynter x Queensbridge) was the second winner on the day for Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki. Running his longest distance so far at 2200m, the 4yo showed versatility, with two of his previous victories over 1200m and 1700m. In Thursday’s LOCAL THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (4yo & older) (70-90), Jimmy Quinn guided the colt to a thrilling victory over JP Guillambert ridden Sarmad Bu Thaila, going past the post with a head to spare.

After mixed efforts over longer distances, Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s YVANLEND (Pivotal x Helen Glaz) registered his second victory this season on Thursday. The gelding had made a winning debut in Qatar before stepping up in distance, finishing third over 2800m on his last outing. In the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4) (80 & below), the Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki ward was helmed by Eduardo Pedroza, and the duo beat Irish import Tremendous Leap by a short head in the 2000m run.
