MOLHEB AL NAIF and TM THUNDER STRUCK register big wins

Yousef Ben Taher Mehaoued’s MOLHEB AL NAIF (Amer x Kesbah) stayed true to his top rating winning the big one on Thursday with Gerald Avranche astride in the mile long turf feature at the QREC. The Al Naif Racing horse had opened the season with a 2000m Conditions win, completing a hat-trick of victories, and continued with the momentum, winning handsomely with a little less than three lengths to spare. Hassan Ali Hassan Al Matwi’s RAQEE (Mared Al Sahra x Cath), who has been impressive so far in the season, grabbed his fifth straight top two finish under Marc Lerner while Theo Bachelot rode Julian Colin Smart’s charge, REDA (Burning Sand x Ba’scherit), to third place.

Eight years old, but TM THUNDER STRUCK (Majd al Arab x Bonnett) did not disappoint Umm Qarn and trainer Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle, topping the penultimate race of the day. In the mile long run, Jean Baptiste Hamel, who had guided the grey son of Majd Al Arab to victory in the Group 2 Qatar National Day Trophy, was astride TM Thunder Struck yet again. This time, he beat the Julian Colin Smart-trained SHABIH ALREEH (Jaafer ASF x Queen Kong), helmed by Theo Bachelot, by a length while Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani’s AJS AL RAYYAN (Amer x Mangaline Du Loup) completed the top three under Eduardo Pedroza.

Derby winner EASTER DE FAUST (Mahabb x Ayisha De Faust) stamped her authority in the 2200m race staying unbeaten since her arrival in Qatar from France where she was a Group 1 winner. The result meant that Champion Trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi, Champion Jockey Harry Bentley and owner

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari topped third straight race on the day. The 4yo beat Umm Qarn’s Al Kabeer for the second straight time, having beaten Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s charge in the Derby too. The Stephan Ladjadj-helmed AL KABEER (No Risk Al Maury x Al Dahma) finished a little less than two lengths behind the winner while Al Shaqab Racing’s MONFARID (TM Fred Texas x Haija) was third under Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim.

Champion Trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi and Champion Jockey Harry Bentley combined well for the second straight race with Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s CAID DE L’ARDUS (Mahabb x Jelfa De L’Ardus) winning the 1100m sprint comfortably. The 6yo had lost out to Julian Colin Smart’s Ba’sil last month, but this time round finished one and a half lengths ahead of the competition, with the Mohammed Hussain Afroz-trained QASSY (Mared Al Sahra x The Write Stuff), ridden by Marc Lerner, notching the runner up spot. BA’SIL (Amer x Somra), helmed by Theo Bachelot in the silks of Al Shahania Stud, managed to hold on for third by a nose ahead of Mutazz.

UMM QARN TROPHY (Thoroughbreds Class 2)

The 2016 Emir’s Trophy winner had finished third behind Courtofversailles on his last run, but on Thursday, went past the line comfortably with two lengths to spare under Champion Jockey Harry Bentley. Sheail Bin Khalifa Al Kuwari’s OPERA BARON (Equiano x Opera Dancer), helmed by JP Guillambert, did well to finish a little under a length ahead of Yousef Ben Taher Mehaoued’s AL MOHALHAL (Acclamation x Secret Question), ridden by Stephan Ladjadj.

YASMEEN CUP (TB Handicap 70-90)

Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s KHATAAF (Shamardal x Sana Abel) was outclassed in the Group 1 Derby last month, but had notched up a hat-trick of wins earlier in the season. On Thursday, however, the gelding bounced back to winning ways with Saleem Golam riding the 4yo to a thrilling victory at the line in the 1850m run. Golam had his mount move up on the outside a furlong out and edged out Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani’s ward ARD SAN AER (Acclamation x Allannah Abu), ridden by Vaclav Janacek, by half a length while Deborah Amanda Clare Mountain’s SHABBAB (Siyouni x Floride) held on for third under Faleh Bughanaim.

CHARM SPIRIT CUP (TB Handicap, 70-90)

Al Shahania Stud’s ORYX (Dansili x Gracefully) had opened his season with a C&D victory and on Thursday stayed unbeaten, winning the seven-furlong run in a close finish. Trained by Julian Colin Smart, the 5yo was ridden to a half a length victory by Theo Bachelot, making it two in a row for the gelding. The win, Oryx’s third overall, saw him finish ahead of the Mohammed Jassim Ghazali Jahromi -trained AL MAFTOON (Lilbourne Lad x Mooching Along), ridden by Harry Bentley, while Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s ward HILLSIDE DREAM (Dream Ahead x Knapton Hill) was third under Pierantonio Convertino.

VERY NICE NAME CUP (TB Graduation Plate)

H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s BARWOD (Lope De Vega x Atlanda) opened the day with his second career victory, topping the miler. Julian Colin Smart’s ward, who had many creditable runs last season, had opened his season far from the front in November, but bounced back well over C&D for a fine win. Theo Bachelot guided the 5yo to a victory, with a little over a length to spare, with Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi’s BEACH SAMBA (Lope De Verga x Braziliz), ridden by Saleem Golam, and Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim’s TEA LEAF (Bushranger x Boston Ivy), helmed by JP Guillambert, completing the top three.
