NORTHERN BEAM, ALHAZM, DUKE OF DUNDEE, QATARI GOLD register wins

Rashid Mohammed Al Jehani trained NORTHERN BEAM (Teofilo x Raaya) came into her own under a fantastic ride by Gerald Avranche in the T/B PEARL (THOROUGHBRED (Fillies & Mares) (Class 2)) on Thursday at the Al Rayyan Park turf. Avranche had the Khalid Rashid Al Mohannadi’s filly take a sizeable advantage early on in the 2000m race and then held on well till

they were threatened coming on to the final straight. However, the 4yo found some extra reserves and pulled away again to win by two lengths and three quarters at the post. Hamad Ahmed Al Malki Al Jehani trained FLOWER FESTIVAL (Dubawi x Folk Opera) and Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani schooled QATAR DANCE (Zebedee x Esterlina) finished second and third under Ronan Thomas and Faleh Bughanaim respectively.

After finishing seventh behind Deborah Amanda Clare Mountain schooled Full Moon in the Qatar Derby, Al Shaqab Racing’s ALHAZM (Acclamation x Mikkwa) bounced back with a fantastic victory over the Abdullah Hassan Ali Abdulmalik colt on Thursday in the T/B CLASSIC RACE (4yo THOROUGHBREDS (Class 2)). Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s charge was in the rear half of the field for the bulk of the 2000m race under Ronan Thomas, with Stephan Ladjadj and Tawahid setting the pace ahead of Ryan Curatolo ridden FULL MOON (Declaration Of War x Dowager) early on. Once the field opened up, Full Moon took a slight advantage, but with a furlong out, had Alhazm breathing down his neck, eventually edging out the former by a nose. Mohammed Jassim Ghazali Jahromi schooled TAWAHID (Delegator x Show Flower) had to settle for third.

Umm Qarn’s DUKE OF DUNDEE (Duke of Marmalade x Santa Louisia) had been winless since arriving in Qatar from France in 2016. Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s charge made amends on Thursday to that record, snapping a streak of two winless seasons, when Ronan Thomas rode the 7yo to a fine victory in the 2800m KHOR AL ADAID CUP (Gr3) (THOROUGHBREDS). The gelding went one better than his showing in the event last year, finishing a length and three quarters ahead of Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi trained GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI (Galileo x Queenscliff), ridden by Ryan Curatolo, while Harry Bentley rode Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi schooled GALACTIC PRINCE (Dubawi x Opera Gal) to third.

Al Shahania Stud’s QATARI GOLD (Lemon Drop Kid x Forest Valentine) was the second straight winner on the day for jockey Theo Bachelot. The gelding, trained by Stefano Ibido, started out the widest in the miler, and when it all came together on the home straight for the AL AREEQ CUP (THOROUGHBREDS (Class 2)), the 6yo had picked up a fine win finishing a length ahead of the rivals.

Given his form, having won a Group 2 last time out, not many expected anyone else to win, and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s EBRAZ (Amer x Massamarie) lived up to the expectations with a comfortable victory in the PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS. In the 1850m run, Theo Bachelot was once again in the saddle of the Julian Colin Smart trained colt, and the two went past the post with two lengths and a quarter to spare for his eighth victory in 21 starts.

Khalid Nasser Hamad Al Naimi’s SAAB (AF Albahar x Fille Des Sables) had put up solid efforts this season, including a victory in November. On Thursday, the 8yo registered his first victory on turf since April 2015 when Gerald Avranche guided the grey horse to a close half a length victory in the six furlong LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS sprint.

Qatari apprentice jockey Rashid Ali Al Marri notched his ninth victory this season so far when he and his partner, SNAFI AL SHAJAA (Amer x Jazeilla Al Naif), registered his first career victory by smallest of margins on Thursday. In the mile long LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (85 & below), Al Marri was in the saddle for trainer and owner Hassan Ali Hassan Al Matwi, and the colt went past the post with an advantage of a nose on Ryan Curatolo ridden Murihk.

Abdulatif Hussain Al Emadi’s BAB AL RAYYAN (Mayson x Dorothy’s Dancing) has done nothing but impress since his debut in December, when he finished runner up over a mile. Since then trainer Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki has had the colt step down in distance, and the 4yo showed versatility winning a seven furlong run two weeks later, before making it two in a row on Thursday in a six furlong LOCAL THOROUGHBRED PLATE (4 Year Olds) sprint. Eduardo Pedroza rode the colt oon all three outings.

Ahmed Hassan Al Malki Al Jehani’s MORE THAN A DREAM (Halling x Chabelle) led a one-two for trainer Hamad Ahmed Al Malki Al Jehani in the day’s opening race. In the 2000m THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (70-90) Ronan Thomas helmed the 6yo to a thrilling short head victory over Rich History, who was ridden by Jean Baptiste Hamel. ,_getStart
