Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s TOPSY TURVY (Pivotal x Helter Helter) brushed aside a forgettable finish to his last season as the gelding bounced back to a fantastic victory in the AL KHOR CUP (THOROUGHBRED CONDITIONS (Class 2)) at Al Rayyan Park’s dirt track on Wednesday. The gelding was the third winner on the day saddled by Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki, and under a fantastic ride by Eduardo Pedroza, beat the Harry Bentley-ridden Altarsheed (Lilbourne Lad x Lilakiya) by a quarter of a length. Ryan Curatolo guided Shabbab (Siyouni x Floride) to the 6yo’s second straight frame finish this season.
Abu Fass Stud’s VOLATILE (Poet’s Voice x Neshla) registered his first victory in Qatar when the gelding won the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (75-95) in scintillating fashion on Wednesday. In the 1100m sprint, it was Pierantonio Convertino in the saddle for the Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim-trained gelding and the two emerged as winners at the post, edging out the Saleh Salem Al Marri-ridden Victory Laurel by a head at the spot. It was Convertino’s first victory of the season.
Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki saddled his second straight winner of the day when Sheikh Khalid Bin Jassim Bin Thani Al Thani’s ADMIRAL (Shamardal x Raheeba) topped the LOCAL THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (85 & below), the colt’s second straight C&D victory. In the 1700m run on dirt, Ryan Curatolo was in the saddle for the 5yo and the two combined well to win comfortably with two lengths and three quarters to spare.
Qatari apprentice jockey Saleh Salem Al-Marri rode his first winner of the season when he helmed Mohammed Khamis Eisa Al Kaabi’s SEVERINI (Shamardal x Ballerina Blue) to victory in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4) (80 & below). The victory was the first for Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s ward in Qatar, finally entering the winner’s circle on his 18th outing at the Al Rayyan Park. In the 1900m run, Al Marri helmed the colt to a one length victory at the post.
After missing out on a chance to stay unbeaten last time round, Umm Qarn’s SEALINE (Amer x Jaljalah) was back in the winner’s circle running his longest distance so far. Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s ward had narrowly missed out on a handicap 20 days ago but on Wednesday, moving back to dirt for the 1700m LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (85 and below), the colt once again paired with Ronan Thomas and the two beat Ryan Curatolo ridden Aneeq by half a length for the 5yo’s third career win.
After showing promise on his first two outings, including a second place over C&D a month ago, Mansoor Ebrahim Al Mahmoud’s TADEEM (Poet’s Voice x Salhooda) made his way into the winner’s circle on Wednesday topping the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (QATARI RIDERS ONLY) (75 & below). In the six furlong sprint on dirt, Gassim Mohammad Ghazali’s ward had apprentice rider Ali Khalid Al Mosallam in the saddle and the two won a fantastic duel at the post, edging out Meteb Ali Al Marri ridden Bint Saffian by a neck.
Shaheen Bin Khalid Shaheen Al Ghanim’s JACKO (Dark Angel x Tartessian) may have gone a full season in Qatar without a win but shed his maiden status in only his second outing this season on Wednesday. Trained by Gassim Mohammad Ghazali, the 3yo had Marco Casamento for company in the THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (Class 6). In the 1900m run on dirt, the two did well to gallop past the post with four lengths to spare.
Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalid Bin Nasser Al Thani’s HAZM AL SULAIMI (TM Fred Texas x Hasna) had finished in the frame on his first two outings this season, and the Gassim Mohammad Ghazali trained colt only improved on Wednesday winning the first race of the meeting. In the six furlong PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE event, with Harry Bentley in the saddle, the 4yo registered a thrilling victory, winning a duel with Rashid Ali Al Marri ridden Forgehill Chiraz by a short head at the post.
