TOPSY TURVY bags Al Wajba Cup

Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s TOPSY TURVY (Pivotal x Helter Helter) went one better than his last outing to top the AL WAJBA CUP (CLASS2 THOROUGHBREDS) at the Al Rayyan Park on Thursday. Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s ward progressed well since the season opener moving up the order coming into Thursday’s run. In the 1900m run, Eduardo Pedroza helmed the 7YO to a fine one and a half-length victory ahead of the Ronan Thomas-ridden VITALLY IMPORTANT (Pivotal x Kirkinola), saddled by Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani. JP Guillambert helmed SHAKOUR (Declaration Of War x Another Storm) completed the top three for trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi.

Sheail Bin Khalifa Al Kuwari’s GANGLAND (Lethal Force x Miss Dutee) bounced back from a forgettable finish last month to win for the first time in Qatar. The Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi-trained gelding had finished ninth over C&D, but made amends on Thursday with a breezy victory under Theo Bachelot in six-furlong THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4), topping by three lengths.

Al Mugheerat Stud’s SHADOW GAME (Shamardal x Victoria Star) had gone winless the entire last season in Qatar and the current season was not looking all that promising too. However, that changed when the 6YO, trained by Wasim Al-Sahn, partnered Al Moatasem Al Balushi in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (70 & below). The colt picked up a close C&D victory on Thursday winning the 1700m race by three quarters of a length.

Moving to Qatar has been good for Umm Qarn’s DABAAB (Munjiz x Haifaa) with the filly and jockey Mathieu Pelletan forming a good partnership. On her debut at Al Rayyan Park last month, Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s ward finished runner-up before notching a maiden two weeks later. On Thursday, the 5YO notched her second straight victory, topping the 1700m PUREBRED ARABIAN GRADUATION PLATE with impressive six and a quarter lengths to spare.

Mohammed Jassim Ghazali Jahromi’s charge, NOBLE MASTERPIECE (Dutch Art x Elysian), registered his first victory in Qatar when the gelding topped the THOROUGHBRED NOVICE PLATE (Class 6). In the six-furlong sprint, JP Guillambert rode the 5YO in the colours of Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari and the duo won by four and a quarter lengths, going one better than the gelding’s last outing.

Stepping up in distance did Meshaal Bin Ali Al Attiyah’s ALMIGDAM (Footstepsinthesand x Know) good as the colt registered his first career victory. The 4YO, trained by Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim, had finished midfield in a six-furlong sprint on debut last month. On Thursday, under Ronan Thomas, the colt pulled away on the home straight to go past the post with four lengths to spare.

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s ATTAF (Footstepsinthesand x Silver Sycamore) had done marginally better than his previous runs less than three weeks ago when finishing fourth. The 4YO further improved on Thursday when Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s ward topped the six-furlong LOCAL THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (Div 2) in imposing fashion. Marco Casamento, riding the colt for the first time, guided him to a fantastic six-length victory at Al Rayyan Park.

Barring a runner-up finish over C&D last month, the Bader Al Balushi-trained NAYER BU THAILA (Gentle Lord x Always Like This) had never come close to shedding his maiden status. That changed on Thursday when Theo Bachelot, riding in the colours of Rashid Mohammed Al Alathba, rode the 4YO in the six-furlong LOCAL THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (Div 1). In the race, the colt finished one and a quarter lengths ahead of the competition to register his first career win.

A switch in surfaces did well for Umm Qarn’s AAFREEN (Atlantic Air x Baaria) who shed her maiden status on her second career outing in the LOCAL THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (3 Year Olds). The Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle-trained filly had finished midfield less than three weeks ago on turf. On Thursday, over the same distance of six furlongs, but this time on dirt, Ronan Thomas helmed the 3YO to a dominant 14-length victory in the card opener.
