Umm Qarn’s DUKE OF DUNDEE wins The Late Yousef Al Romaihi Cup thriller


Umm Qarn’s DUKE OF DUNDEE (Duke of Marmalade x Santa Louisia) had bounced back to form when he landed a Gr3 over 2800 in his penultimate start before he finished midfield in Gr1 company last month. In Thursday’s feature, THE LATE YOUSEF AL ROMAIHI CUP (THOROUGHBREDS (Class 2)), the Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle schooled gelding picked up a thrilling victory under Ronan Thomas as they edged out Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi’s ward, GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI (Galileo x Queenscliff) by a neck at the post in the 3200m. Ivan Rossi’s mount was locked in a duel with the eventual winner and finished two lengths ahead of third placed MASTERPIECE (Mastercraftsman x Modern Eagle), ridden by Harry Bentley for trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi.

Stepping up in distance from a six furlong sprint to a mile made no difference to the result as Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s INDIAN HORSEMAN (Sepoy x Jubilant Queen) emerged as the fourth winner of the day for trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi. With Harry Bentley in the saddle, the 3yo edged out Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani schooled Rex Place, ridden by John Egan, by half a length in the THOROUGHBRED PLATE (3 Year Olds) (Class 2) for the gelding’s third career victory in six outings.

Jockey John Egan rode his second winner on the first day of his season when Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani saddled HAJAJ (Dark Angel x And Again) topped the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (75-95). In the 1850m run, the Al Jeryan Stud colt, building on some respectable runs, including a victory and three other in-frame finishes earlier in the season, edged out Al Moatasem Al Balushi ridden Kassar by a quarter of a length, while another Al Ramzani ward Hajaam completed the top three under Tomas Lukasek.

Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s SHAMAN BU THAILA (Soviet Secret x Picnic Party) continued with his spectacular form as the 5yo completed a hat-trick of victories. In the mile long LOCAL THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (70-90), Eduardo Pedroza helmed the colt as the duo were unstoppable in their four lengths and a quarter victory, while another Al Malki ward, Mister Mahjoob made full use of his weight advantage for a second place under Marco Casamento.

With a second place in a Group 2 during the Festival last month, Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s LUCHADOR (Holy Roman Emperor x Bride Unbridled) came into her own on Thursday, going one better to win the THOROUGHBRED PLATE (3 Year Olds) (Class 3). In the six furlong sprint, under a fantastic ride by JP Guillambert, the filly picked up a thrilling victory by half a length. It was Champion Trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s third straight winner on the day.

Almost a year after he last walked into the winner’s circle, Al Shahania Stud’s E’ZAAZ (Amer x Naama ASF) was back for the second time in his career with the Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s ward topping the PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (80 & below) in comfortable fashion on Thursday. In the seven furlong run, the 6yo had Champion Jockey Harry Bentley for company and the two went past the post with two lengths and three quarters to spare.

Al Ghazali Stud’s LEKHRAIB (AF AlBahar x Grace T) improved big time when he finished fifth out of 16 in his last outing a month ago, after being well held in his earlier efforts. On Thursday, Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s colt shed his maiden status when Anas Al Seyabi helmed the 5yo to a fine one length victory in the mile long PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE (4-6yo).

Al Jeryan Stud’s AJS AL SHAHANIA (AF AlBahar x Karima ASF) picked up a thrilling victory on her debut on Thursday. Trained by Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani, the Qatar bred filly, topped the seven furlong PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE (3 Year Olds) by three quarters of a length under a credible ride by John Egan on the jockey’s first day of the season in Qatar.

Umm Qarn’s FAHIM (General x Malakbe) was a smooth winner on his second career outing last month, before he put in an impressive run in the Al Zubara Trophy moving up in distance to 2000m. On Thursday, in the 1850m LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN NOVICE PLATE, with Ronan Thomas in the saddle once again, the Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle trained colt was back in the winner’s circle with a fantastic three and a half length victory.
