Umm Qarn’s YAZEED a winner in THE LATE SHEIKH JASSIM BIN MOHAMMED AL THANI TROPHY (Gr2 PA)

Umm Qarn’s YAZEED (Munjiz x Al Dahma) followed up a promising Longchamp outing in October with a memorable win in the THE LATE SHEIKH JASSIM BIN MOHAMMED AL THANI TROPHY – QATAR NATIONAL DAY TROPHY (Gr2 PA) (3yo & older) at the Al Rayyan Park turf on Sunday. The going on the soft side post some rain in the Qatari capital, Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s ward had little trouble over a mile and two furlongs as the 6yo won by a length and a quarter under a fantastic ride by Ronan Thomas. Mohammed Nasser Al Naimi’s AKMAR (No Risk Al Maury x Safa), ridden by Luca Maniezzi for trainer Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani, edged out another Umm Qarn colt, TAYF (Amer x Djelmila), helmed by Soufiane Saadi, by a short head for the runner up spot.

Al Naif Racing’s MOLHEB AL NAIF (Amer x Kesbah) has rarely put a foot wrong in his career and Sunday was no different where the 7yo handed Champion Trainer Gassim Mohammad Ghazali his only victory of the day. In the LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS (NATIONAL DAY CUP), the horse had Champion Jockey Harry Bentley for company and the fantastic ride saw them win by a dominant five lengths and three quarters, with Ronan Thomas riding Umm Qarn’s AAHIL (Munjiz x Daniah) to second place. Another Ghazali ward, JENJAL (Af Albahar x Gold Label) was third under JP Guillambert.

CRISTOFANO ALLORI (Shamardal x Perfect Touch) made it two victories in a row for Abdulaziz Ali Al Kathiri. The 5yo showed versatility going from a victory in 1100m dirt feature last month to a six furlong victory on soft turf on Sunday, with Ronan Thomas guiding the horse in the THOROUGHBRED CONDITIONS (Class 2). The horse beat Eduardo Pedroza helmed Munira Eyes by a length and a quarter for his seventh career win.

Ahmed Hassan Al Malki Al Jehani’s FRENCH ENCORE (Showcasing x French Connexion) entered the winner’s circle for the first time since April 2016 as the gelding topped THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (75-95) in yet another close finish on Sunday. In the mile long race, Al Moatasem Al Balushi guided the 6yo, trained by Hamad Ahmed Al Malki Al Jehani, to a fine victory going past the post half a length ahead of the competition.

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s MR DIAMOND (Bated Breath x Diamond Lass) was midfield on his Group 3 debut in Qatar two weeks ago. But the Mohammed Gassim Ghazali trained gelding took a liking to the soft ground on Sunday and JP Guillambert was fantastic on the 3yo guiding him to a close half a length victory in the seven furlong THOROUGHBRED PLATE (3 Year Olds) (Class 3).

After going winless the entire last season, Al Jasra Stud’s SHOBROM (Acclamation x Strasbourg Place) was back in the winner’s circle on Sunday. The Ahmed Mohamad Kobeissi trained gelding had Ivan Rossi in the saddle for the first time and the two got on just fine in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (75-95), topping the five furlong sprint by half a length beating two horses saddled by Champion Trainer Gassim Mohammad Ghazali – Noble Masterpiece and Midsummer Knight.

Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s AL HAITHAM (Dream Ahead x Mohicane) brushed aside a forgettable finish and stepped up well in distance to register his second career victory. In the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) (70-90), the Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki trained colt was running his longest distance so far at 2000m and Anas Al Seyabi gave a fantastic ride to the 3yo as they edged out Gassim Mohammad Ghazali’s duo – Yaarmen and Tremendous Leap – by a head.

Qatari Jockey Saleh Salem Al Marri rode his third winner of the season when he was astride Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s DEEBAJ (Amer x Obe De Ghazal). In the PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (95 & below), the Mohammed Gassim Ghazali  trained mare got back to winning ways after a few blips in the last two races. The 6yo had closed out the last season with hat-trick of wins and on Sunday she won by half a length in the mile long race.

Osama Omer Al Dafea’s TAHAR (TM Fred Texas x Insaf) perhaps took a liking to the turf when the going was soft as the 4yo shed his maiden status on his 11th outing at the Al Rayyan Park on Sunday. In the PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE (4 Year Olds), the colt had Ryan Curatolo for company and the two did enough to win the miler by half a length in a close finish.
