Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s OPERA BARON triumphs in Mesaimeer Cup

Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s OPERA BARON (Equiano x Opera Dancer) put a fantastic display on the dirt at Al Rayyan Park as JP Guillambert guided the Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi trained gelding to a fine victory in the MESAIMEER CUP (THOROUGHBREDS (Class 2)) on Wednesday. The 6yo, winner of a Gr2 earlier in the season, went one better than his last feature outing two weeks ago, beating Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki trained TOPSY TURVY (Pivotal x Helter Helter), ridden by Eduardo Pedroza, by two lengths and three quarters. Deborah Amanda Clare Mountain saddled SHABBAB (Siyouni x Floride) completed the top three under Saleem Golam’s ride.

Olivier Materne’s DIESE (General x Divana) had never finished outside the frame since his arrival in Doha in November of 2017. The Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle trained colt continued that run, even notching his fourth career win and second this season having won the first feature race in October last year. In the 1900m PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (90 & below), with Ronan Thomas astride, the 6yo edged out Rashid Ali Ali Marri ridden Taysh by a neck at the post. It was De Mieulle’s third win on the day and Thomas’ fourth.

Ronan Thomas was in the saddle for his third winner of the day, Meshaal Bin Ali Al Attiyah’s ALMIGDAM (Footstepsinthesand x Know), in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4) (85 & below). This was the fourth straight victory for Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi’s ward, who was running his longest distance at 1800m in his short five race career so far. The 4yo also led a one-two for the champion trainer with JP Guillambert guiding Yaarmen to a close second.

Jassim Mohamed Ghazali Jahromi trained SACRED WAY (Oasis Dream x Heronetta) had been below form this season, barring a runner-up finish in January over 1700m. On Wednesday, however, in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (Qatari Riders Only) (75 & below), the Shaheen Bin Khalid Shaheen Al Ghanim owned gelding did enough under apprentice jockey Ali Khalid Al Mosallam to pick up his season’s first victory with two and a half lengths to spare. Rashid Ali Al Marri guided Al Mikdam to second place while Saleh Salem Al Marri helmed Warsaan to third.

Qatari jockey Rashid Ali Al Marri continued to impress when he helmed his 12th winner of the season on Wednesday. In the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (75 & below), the apprentice jockey was in the saddle for Salem Fadgham Al Hajri trained ACCLAIMED DANCER (Acclamation x Belly Dancer) and the duo combined well to win by a comfortable length and a quarter. This was the colt’s second victory this season with Al Marri.

Umm Qarn’s BADDA (Seraphin Du Paon x Raqiyah) was expected to go one better than her runner-up performance on debut and Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle’s ward did not disappoint, leading a one-two for the famous silks in the PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE (Fillies & Mares) (4-6yo). This was the second winner on the day for Ronan Thomas, who helmed the 4yo to a thrilling quarter length victory over stablemate Naima, ridden by Mathieu Pelletan.

Umm Qarn’s SEALINE (Amer x Jaljalah) made a smashing debut in the six furlong LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN MAIDEN PLATE sprint. With Ronan Thomas astride, the 5yo, trained by Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle, beat Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki trained Texas at the post by three lengths to open his account.

Subaiya Awad Ibrahim’s DHERGHAM BU THAILA (Soviet Secret x Dualite) improved on his seventh place finish in spectacular fashion shedding his maiden status on just his second outing on Wednesday. In the six furlong LOCAL THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE, Mohamed Khaled Elahmed trained gelding had Anas Al Seyabi in the saddle and the duo went past the post with a dominant four lengths and a quarter to spare.
