The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) organised the 22nd and final race meeting in the 2023-24 season calendar of the Al Uqda Racecourse on Saturday, 2nd March 2024. Jockey Jefferson Smith wrapped up the seven-race card day and the Al Uqda 2023/24 season with a remarkable four-timer completed in the feature race as he partnered the Hassan bin Ali Hassan Al Matwi-owned Medan (FR) (Assy x Djergali) to victory in the Al Bayt Cup. The Mohammed Hassan Al Matwi-trained six-year-old mare had the leaders in her sights up the straight and produced a strong challenge inside the final 200m of the 2300m Class 2 Purebred Arabian Handicap for four-year-old and older horses rated 80-100 to take the lead and win by half a length. The Triple Two Racing-owned and Gassim Ghazali-trained Ikef De Bozouls (FR) (No Risk Al Maury) finished second under jockey Arnaud De Lepine. The H.E. Sheikha Iman bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Haman (FR) (Mared Al Sahra) finished a further length and a quarter behind in third under jockey Tomas Lukasek. Racing Manager, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, presented the trophies to the winners.

Royalty

The Sabhea Awad Ibrahim-owned Royalty (QA) (Migwar x Al Faraj) made amends for her miss last time out when she finished runner-up and was denied her first success. This time, the four-year-old took victory in the day’s opener, the 1400m Class 6 Local Thoroughbred Maiden Plate for three-to-six-year-olds under jockey Muanis Al Siyabi. The Ibrahim Khaled Elahmed-trained gelding streaked clear of the field to win by very comfortable three lengths.

Zakadir

Wathnan Racing’s Zakadir (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Al Dahma) put in a very impressive effort in the 2100m Class 5 Purebred Arabian Novice Plate for four-year-olds to take apart the field and streak clear by a comfortable two length margin at the line. Ridden by Arnaud De Lepine and trained by Alban De Mieulle, the grey colt could be one to keep an eye on in the future with two wins and a placed finish in six career starts so far.

Katleiya

Katleiya (FR) (Gleneagles x Lady Katanga) provided owner Abdulaziz Saleh Al Jaber and trainer Hadi Al Ramzani with a comfortable victory in the 2100m Class 5 Thoroughbred Novice Plate for four-year-old and older fillies and mares. Ridden by jockey Jefferson Smith, the four-year-old filly was produced with a rattle to draw clear of the field by four and a half lengths.
