Afandem clinches Al Mafiar Cup

The race meeting, conducted on dirt at QREC Al Rayyan Racecourse on Wednesday, 17th April 2024, concluded with the Al Mafiar Cup, a Class 2 Conditions for 4YO+ Local Purebred Arabian, where Arnaud De Lepine steered the Ahmed Kobeissi-trained Afandem (AF AlBahar x Maboud), in the colours of Nasser Hamad Al Naimi to a narrow victory over the Sabhea Awad Ibrahim-owned and Ibrahim Khaled Elahmed-trained Suka'ar (QA) (Burning Sand), who was ridden by Szczepan Mazur. The bay horse edged out his rival by a neck in the 1200m sprint. The Abdullah Bin Saeed Abdullah Al-Mesnad-owned and Wasim Al Sahn-trained Hadlan (QA) (AF AlBahar) completed the frame in third under jockey Al Moatasem Al Balushi although he was far behind as the runner-up established a seven-length margin ahead of him. Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.

Galeb Al Shahania

In opener, the 1700m Class 6 Local Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate for 4-6YOs, the H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned Galeb Al Shahania (QA) (Burning Sand x Gidwa) was rewarded for his placed finishes in all his previous five starts. The 4YO colt stormed four lengths clear of the 14-runner field to take the first prize. Trained by Rudy Nerbonne and ridden by Lukas Delozier, the grey colt enjoyed the run of the race from the front and made no mistake once he was asked to clear away – it was a mighty performance and the son of Burning Sand could now be set for a more promising campaign next season.

Pagliacci

Al Fakhama Racing’s Pagliacci (IRE) (Gleneagles x California) showed a good attitude for jockey Saleh Salem Al-Marri as the chestnut gelding managed to hold off his challengers by a quarter of a length, providing trainer Ahmed Al Jehani with victory in the 1700m Class 6 Thoroughbred Maiden Plate for3YOs.

Kera De Flauzins

A relentless charge in the final stages of the 1700m Class 5 Novice Plate for 4YO+ Purebred Arabian fillies and mares enabled the Khalifa bin Sheail Al Kuwari-owned Kera De Flauzins (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Sayrah) to win the race for trainer Julian Smart. The 4YO filly responded well to jockey Muanis Al Siyabi and stayed on to win by three-quarters of a length.

Meraj

In the Class 5 Thoroughbred Handicap (50-70) for 3YO+, Division 1, spectators were treated to an electrifying performance as Meraj (USA) (Army Mule x Star Pearl) thundered across the finish line, securing victory by an impressive seven and a half lengths. Owned by Al Wasmiyah Farm, trained by Gassim Ghazali, and ridden by jockey Louis Nomis, Meraj dominated the 1100m race, demonstrating his exceptional speed and scoring his second straight victory.

Mutamarrid

In a thrilling finish to the Class 5 Local Thoroughbred Handicap (35-55) for horses aged three and older, Mutamarrid (QA) (Youmzain x Rose Rose) clinched his second victory of the season in a nail-biting race over 1200 meters. Ridden by jockey Lukas Delozier and trained by Jihad El Ahmad, the Injaaz Stud-owned 7YO horse edged out his competitors by a mere quarter of a length.

Sardem

Sardem (FR) (Siyouni x Sarkiyla) emerged victorious in the Class 4 Thoroughbred Handicap (60-80) for horses aged three and older, covering 1200 meters with finesse. Under the guidance of jockey Maikon De Souza and the training of Bader Al Balushi, Sardem, owned by Al Azraq Stable, surged ahead to claim victory by a commanding margin of one and a half lengths. This triumph marked Sardem's first win in four starts this season.

Keheilan Al Sakab

Keheilan Al Sakab (QA) (AF AlBahar x Keheilah) soared to victory in the Class 4 Purebred Arabian Handicap (60-80) for horses aged four and older, over 1200 meters with undeniable prowess. The Bader Al Baloshi-owned and trained 6YO gelding surged ahead to clinch victory by an impressive margin of three lengths, completing a quick-fire double for jockey Maikon De Souza and marking his own second consecutive victory.

Keel Bay

In the 1200m Class 3 Thoroughbred Handicap for 3YO+ rated (70-90), it was the Jassim Bin Ali M A Al-Attiyah-owned who emerged victorious for trainer Mohammed Ghazali, completing a double in the evening for jockey Louis Nomis. The 5YO mare stayed on strongly up the straight to defeat her nearest rival by one and a half lengths.

Fifty Grand Slater

There was another seven-length winning margin in meeting and it came the penultimate race, the 1100m Class 5 Thoroughbred Handicap for 3YO+ rated (50-70), Div. 2. In a dominating performance, the Triple Two Racing-owned Fifty Grand Slater (IRE) (Kodiac x Natheer) scored for the second time on the row and again under jockey Marco Casamento, giving trainer Gassim Ghazali another winner on the card.
