The 2024 renewal of The Late Yousef Al Romaihi Cup took the centre stage in the race meeting conducted on turf at the QREC Al Rayyan Racecourse on Thursday, 7th March. Jockey Alberto Sanna recorded a second success of the day as he teamed up with trainer Gassim Ghazali for the Nasser Saeed M S Al-Eida-owned Seulomonde (GB) (Dubawi x Solemia) to come out on top in The Late Yousef Al Romaihi Cup, a 3200m Class 2 Thoroughbred Open Race for four-year-old and older horses. The six-year-old bounced to winning ways and came with a big run to prevail by a quarter of a length. The Wathnan Racing-owned and Alban de Mieulle-trained Hamaki (IRE) (Churchill) was the runner-up, finishing in the same spot he obtained in his previous start, under his regular jockey Soufiane Saadi. It was a thrilling finish with three runners battling in the final strides of the marathon distance with the Rashid Awajan K A Al-Khayarin-owned and Hamad Al-Jehani-trained Toromona (IRE) (Shamardal) finishing only a further neck behind in third under jockey Tomas Lukasek. Ali, Fahad, Mubarak and Mohammed, sons of the late Yousef Al Romaihi, crowned the winners.

Maza'aj Al Shahania

The meeting was marked by some tight finishes and that was clear from the very first race, the 1600m Class 6 Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate for four-to-six-year olds where the Al Shahania Stud-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Maza'aj Al Shahania (FR) (Burning Sand x Mizabelle) edged out the Abdulrahman Batal A A Al-Otibi-owned and Mohammed Ali Al Saaq-trained Dabas (FR) (AF AlBahar), just holding on in the final strides by a head under jockey Lukas Delozier. The good runner-up was ridden by jockey Abdulla Rashid Al-Hajri.

Royalty

In the 1600m Class 5 Local Thoroughbred Novice Plate for four-year-old and older horses, Muanis Al Siyabi partnered the Sabhea Awad Ibrahim-owned and Ibrahim Khaled Elahmed-trained Royalty (QA) (Migwar x Al Faraj) to his second straight win, racing prominently throughout and going nicely clear in the final furlong to win by three quarters of a length.

Kadovar

The 1600m Class 5 Thoroughbred Novice Plate for three-year-olds and older went to trainer Georges Mikhalides and his colt Kadovar (IRE) (Dark Angel x Bulrushes), owned by Al Wasmiyah Farm, after the four-year-old quickened up nicely in the straight, going one and a half lengths clear and winning well under jockey Alberto Sanna.

Al Mehrab

Trainer Hamad Al-Jehani got his name on the scoresheet in the 1600m Class 4 Thoroughbred Handicap race for-four-year-old and older horses rated 60-80 as his five-year-old Al Mehrab (GB) (Zarak x Angel Oak) flew home in the final stages under jockey Tomas Lukasek to land the spoils for owner Ibrahim Mohammed M I Al-Fadala. The bay horse shot clear to defeat the Mohammed Khamis Eisa Al-Kaabi-owned and Mohammed Khamis Al-Kaabi-trained Chorus Line (GB) (Territories) by a quarter of a length. The runner-up was ridden by Muanis Al Siyabi.

Ajaayeb Al Jasra

The 1600m Class 4 Purebred Arabian Graduation Plate for four-year-old and older fillies and mares saw the Al Jasra Stud-owned Ajaayeb Al Jasra (FR) (AF AlBahar x Ammante), trained by Mohammed Ghazali and ridden by Ivan Rossi, come with a well-timed challenge to beat the nearest rival by a length.

Casimir De Codines

The 2000m Class 4 Purebred Arabian Handicap for four-year-old and older horses rated 65-85 saw an exciting finish as the Abdulrahman Abdulwahed-trained-Casimir De Codines (FR) (Majd Al Arab x Eau De Roche) came with a strong run to defeat the Hamad Nasser H Al-Naimi-owned and Ahmed Kobeissi-trained Saqr (FR) (Dahess) by just a neck. The Khadija Mohammed Al Bastaki-owned Casimir De Codines, ridden by Giuseppe Cultraro, timed his challenge perfectly, coming with a rattle in the final furlong to just get up in the shadow of the post. The good runner-up was ridden by Ivan Rossi.

Al Shomos

The same neck margin separated the top two in the 2000m Class 3 Local Thoroughbred Handicap for four-year-old and older horses rated 55-75 as the Saeed bin Mubarak Saeed Aljafali Al Naimi-owned and Ahmed Kobeissi-trained Al Shomos (QA) (Shamardal x Gulbarg) just got the better of the battle with the Abdulatif Hussain M Z Al-Emadi-owned and the Bader Al Balushi-trained Al Faisal (QA) (Trade Storm) under a good ride from jockey Faleh Bughanaim. It was Al Shomos’s second straight victory and in gaining it, she nine-year-old mare gave her trainer a winner after he had been tightly denied in the previous race. The close runner-up was ridden by Soufiane Saadi.

Dawi

For the third consecutive time on the day, neck was the final margin between the first two home in the 1850m Class 2 Purebred Arabian Conditions for four-year-olds and older. The HE Sheikha Iman bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani-owned Dawi (FR) (Amer x Djamour Des Forges) provided and trainer Rudy Nerbonne and jockey Lukas Delozier with their second winner on the day. Delozier had to get serious on Dawi and the seven-year-old horse responded well in a tight finish, prevailing over the Sheikh Ahmad bin Mohamed F N Al-Thani-owned and Mohammed Salama Ashour-trained Eifrit (FR) (Jenjal) by a neck denying Alberto Sanna, onboard Eifrit, his third winner on the day.
