Miracle Nation clinches Distaff Cup28-12-23
Carrying the colours of Yousuf Mubarak Y A Al-Kuwari, Miracle Nation (IRE) (Sioux Nation x Deira Miracle) won the inaugural edition of the Distaff Cup for trainer Hamad Al-Jehani, wrapping up the eight-race card meeting conducted at Al Uqda Racecourse on Thursday, 28th December. The three-year-old filly was given a brilliant ride by Faleh Bughanaim, who did well to thwart the spirited bid of the eventual runner-up, Cathy Come Home (GB) (Expert Eye), edge her out by a neck and clinch victory in the 1400m Conditions for Thoroughbred Fillies and Mares. The brave runner up is owned by Al Rufaa Racing and trained by Gassim Ghazali and was ridden by jockey Szczepan Mazur. KALIYSTA (IRE) (Holy Roman Emperor), owned by Abdulatif Hussain M Z Al-Emadi and trained by Bader Al Balushi, completed the frame as she finished further three quarters of a length behind in third under jockey Al Moatasem Al Balushi Abdulaziz Jassim Al Boenain, Al Uqda Complex Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.
The Wathnan Racing-owned and Alban de Mieulle-trained Toufik (QA) (Amer x Waqaar) perfectly opened the day and his own career, as the three-year-old colt, on debut, was ridden by Alberto Sanna to emerge on top in the Local Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate for three-to-six-year-olds. It was a thrilling three-way finish in the 1400m contest with a neck and a further neck separating the first three home. The close runner-up was the H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Khamees (QA) [(Azadi), who was ridden by Lukas Delozier. The Zakia (QA) (Alam Al Khalediah) finished a good third under jockey Carlos Henrique, making a promising debut for owner Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle.
The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Salman M Al-Thani-owned Oddyssey (GB) (Ulysses x Last Echo), on his second start in Qatar, confirmed his promising last outing when he d fourth in the Al Rayyan Stakes a week ago.The Gassim Ghazali-trained colt did well enough this time around to win the 1400m Thoroughbred Maiden Plate for two-year-olds cosily by a length with Soufiane Saadi in the saddle. However, the minor honours saw a heated battle with two runners going head-by-head in the last strides. It was the Al Jeryan Stud-owned and M.H.K Al Attiyah-trained Aafoor (USA) (Qurbaan) who managed, under jockey Szczepan Mazur, to win that battle, finishing a neck ahead of his brave rival. The third placed was the Noora Racing Limited-owned and Hamad Al-Jehani-trained Bu Sidra (GB) ((Le Brivido) and he was ridden by Faleh Bughanaim.
Al Nasr Al Washeek
The Khalifa Bin Sheail KH J Al Kuwari-owned Al Nasr Al Washeek (QA) (Toronado x Secret Question) built on his fourth-placed finish last time out to score for the second time for trainer Julian Smart. Under jockey Jefferson Smith, the four-year-old gelding won the 1400m Local Thoroughbred Novice Plate for three-year-olds and older by half a length.
The narrow winning margin trend continued in the fourth race of the day with the Wathnan Racing-owned Ghanem (FR) (Tabarak x Bahjah) taking the 1400m Purebred Arabian Novice Plate for three-year-olds by a head, making a prefect debut and giving trainer Alban de Mieulle another winner on the day and jockey Carlos Henrique a good win in the card. The good close runner-up was the Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani-owned and Mohamed Khaled Elahmed-trained Raslaan (QA) (AF AlBahar) and he was ridden by Saleh Salem Al-Marri.
In the following race, the Lulwa Bint Faisal Al Haidos-owned and Bader Al Balushi-trained Franklin William (GB) (Frankel x Kiyoshi) stopped the narrow winning margin trend, bolting up by four and a half lengths away from his nearest rival in the Thoroughbred Handicap (50-70) for three-year-olds and older. Under jockey Al Moatasem Al Balushi,the four-year-old gelding managed to shed his maiden tag in the 2200m contest.
Barq Al Atam
The close finishes marking the day returned quickly in the sixth race in the card as the 1400m Local Thoroughbred Handicap (35-55) for three-year-olds and older saw a thrilling blanket finish with the Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani-owned and Mohamed Khaled Elahmed-trained Barq Al Atam (QA) (Trade Storm x Lucilla) landing the spoils by a nose under Soufiane Saadi, who registered his second win in the card. The good runner-up was the Al Jeryan Stud-owned and M.H.K Al Attiyah-trained AJS Duhail (QA) (Camelot), who was ridden by jockey Szczepan Mazur. The third placed was the Nasser Faleh Nasser S S Bughenaim-owned and Ali Yousuf Al-Kubaisi-trained Shaha (QA) (Lethal Force) as he was only a further neck behind under jockey Saleh Salem Al-Marri.
The Al Jeryan Stud-owned AJS Anayid (BE) (AF AlBahar x Anayid) bounced back to good form on her third start this season, having finished second on the first. Under jockey Szczepan Mazur, the four-year-old filly did find difficulty winning the Purebred Arabian Handicap (65-85) for three-year-olds and older, as she took the 1400m by two and three quarters of a length to give trainer M.H.K Al Attiyah a winner in the card.
