Under the patronage and in presence of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of Qatar Olympic Committee, the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Rifle Day, was conducted on turf at QREC Al Rayyan Racecourse on Saturday, 20th January 2024. Following the 10th and final race of the day, His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani crowned the winners of the last two races of meeting; the Gr3 PA HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for Purebred Arabians, which was won by Wathnan Racing’s Abbes for the second straight year, and the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Rifle for Thoroughbreds, which was landed by Wathnan Racing’s Simca Mille. His Excellency also crowned the winners of the traditional racing event, Al Sabiq, held on the sidelines of His Excellency’s day, and presented the trophies to the top four riders Saleh Salem Al Marri, Omar Ahmed Al Khayareen, Mohammed Kamaan Al Hajri and Abdulla Rashid Al Hajri. Hamad Bin Abdulrahman Al Attiya, Chairman of the Asian Equestrian Federation and Vice Chairman of QREC, was present during the trophy presentation ceremony. It was a day to remember for Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle, winning five of the day’s ten cup races.

Simca Mille

It was Simca Mille (IRE) (Tamayuz x Swertia) who emerged victorious in the day’s feature for owner Wathnan Racing, whose colours dominated the 2200m Thoroughbred race, taking all first three places. The Alban de Mieulle-trained and Mickael Barzalona-ridden winner won by a neck ahead of Haunted Dream (IRE) (Oasis Dream) and Jeff Koons (IRE) (Frankel), wrapping up a memorable day for the winning owner and trainer with five victories and for the winning jockey who rode four winners. Both the runner-up and the third placed are trained by Hamad Al-Jehani and were ridden by James Doyle and Christophe Soumillon respectively and the margin between them was a length.

Abbes

In the day’s other feature and penultimate race in the card, multiple Gr1 champion Abbes (FR) (TM Fred Texas x Raqiyah) retrained the title of the Gr3 PA HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for the second year in a row. Mickael Barzalona notched his third win in the card, having waited until the final 200m of the 2200m race for Purebred Arabians before kicking for home and the 7YO quickened up smartly and stretched clear by two lengths, giving Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle a fourth winner on the day. The H.E. Sheikha Reem bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Feel The Burn (US) (Burning Sand) finished second under jockey Lukas Delozier. The H.E. Sheikha Iman bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Hareeb (FR) (Mared Al Sahra) finished further three quarters of a length behind in third under jockey Tomas Lukasek.

Talg'at Al Shahania

In a thrilling start to the day’s racing, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s homebred Talg'at Al Shahania (QA) (Mared Al Sahra x Kampanule De Ghazal) was saddled by Rudy Nerbonne to get the better of stablemate Galeb Al Shahania (QA) (Burning Sand) by just a neck at the line and win the 1750m Local Purebred Arabian Premium Maiden Cup, recording a one-two for the owner and the trainer. The runner-up was ridden by Maxime Guyon. The Hassan bin Ali Hassan Al Matwi-owned and Mohammed Hassan Al Matwi-trained TAYYAR AL SHAHANIA (QA) (Jaafer ASF) finished a further length and a quarter behind in third under jockey Alberto Sanna. QREC Racing Manager, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, crowned the winners.

Toufik

Carrying the colours of Wathnan Racing, Toufik (QA), the Alban de Mieulle-trained Amer colt, stayed unbeaten in his two career runs as he took the 1400m Local Purebred Arabian Novice Cup comfortably by three quarters of a length with jockey Alberto Sanna onboard. The Sharq Stud-owned and M. Al Sulaiti-trained Kab Ghazal (QA) (No Risk Al Maury) finished second under jockey Abdelkabir Benlarbi. The Al Shahania Stud-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Mastoora (QA) (Mared Al Sahra) finished a further half a length behind in third under jockey Maxime Guyon. Sheikha Alanood bint Abdullah Al Thani, Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, of Education Above All, presented the trophies to the winners.

Come Quick

In another close finish, the Abdulatif Hussain M Z Al-Emadi-owned and Bader Al Balushi-trained Come Quick (IRE) (Es Que Love x In Seconds), ridden by Maxime Guyon, did ‘come quick’ in the final strides to prevail in the 1200m Thoroughbred Sprint by a neck ahead of Taxiwala (IRE) (Holy Roman Emperor) and win the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for the second straight year. The close runner-up is owned and trained by Osama Omer E Al-Dafea and was ridden by Ronan Thomas. The Wathnan Racing-owned and Alban de Mieulle-trained Dark Trooper (IRE) (Dark Angel) finished a further length and three quarters behind under jockey James Doyle. Bader Mohammed Al Darwish, QREC Acting CEO, crowned the winners.

Soldier's Gold

Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle had their second winner on the day when jockey Mickael Barzalona powered Soldier's Gold (IRE) (Soldier's Call x Copperbeech) home to beat the field with an impressive four and a half-length victory, landing HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for 3YO Thoroughbreds over 1500m. It was a one-two for the winning owner with the Hamad Al-Jehani-trained Solar Aclaim (IRE) (Aclaim) finishing second under jockey Christophe Soumillon. The Khalifa Bin Sheail KH J Al Kuwari-owned and Zuhair Mohsen-trained Hala Emaraaty (IRE) (Kodiac) was further two lengths behind in third under jockey Soufiane Saadi. QREC Racing Manager, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, presented the trophies to the winners.

Harb

The Al Rabban Racing’s homebred Harb (QA) (Time Test x Poyle Jessica) continued his good form, registering his second victory in four starts this season. The Rashid Al Jehani-trained 5YO was partnered by jockey Tomas Lukasek to cosily win the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy for Local Thoroughbreds run over 1750m by three quarters of a length. The Abdulatif Hussain M Z Al-Emadi-owned and Bader Al Balushi-trained Black Pearl (QA) (Footstepsinthesand) finished second under jockey Maxime Guyon. The Al Jeryan Stud-owned and M.H.K Al Attiyah-trianed Al Buraq (QA) (Nathaniel) finished further two lengths and a quarter in third under jockey Szczepan Mazur. Band Width

Band Width (IRE) (Gutaifan x Party Whip) continued the trend of exciting finishes with a hard-fought victory in the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy, an 1400m open race for Thoroughbreds, having passed the post only a neck in front of Stylish Performer (IRE) (Dandy Man) to complete a treble for Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle and double for jockey Mickael Barzalona on the day. The good runner-up is owned by Mohammed Abdulhadi S Al-Hajri and trained by Hamad Al-Jehani and was ridden by Lukas Delozier. The Saif Rashid Saif Al Khayarin-owned and Hamad Al-Jehani-trained Lil' Frank (GB) (Frankel) was further one and a half lengths behind under jockey Ronan Thomas. Bader Mohammed Al Darwish, QREC Acting CEO, crowned the winners.

Ghadah

Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred Ghadah (FR) (Azadi x Majida) won the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy, as the 5YO mare dominated the 1750m open race for Purebred Arabians by four lengths for trainer Jean de Mieulle with Christophe Soumillon in the saddle, retaining the title for Al Shaqab Racing for the second year in a row. It was also a one-two for the winning owner and trainer with Al Wakrah (FR) (TM Fred Texas) finishing second under jockey Faleh Bughanaim. The H.E. Sheikha Reem bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani-owned and Rudy Nerbonne-trained Methgal (FR) (TM Fred Texas) finished further three lengths and a quarter behind in third under jockey Lukas Delozier. Abdulla Mohammed Al Kuwari, QREC Board Member, crowned the winners.

Mkaee'lat Al Shahania

H.E. Sheikha Yasmeen bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani’s Mkaee'lat Al Shahania (FR) (TM Fred Texas x Mkeefa) confirmed her class with a comfortable one-and-three-quarter win of the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy, a 1750 race for Purebred Arabians, recording her second victory in her third career start and completing a double on the day for trainer Rudy Nerbonne and jockey Maxime Guyon. The Mubarak Ali M Al-Nuaimi-owned and Zuhair Mohsen-trained No Reply Al Maury (FR) (Azadi) finished second under jockey Soufiane Saadi. The Al Shaqab Racing-owned and Jean de Mieulle-trained Al Zwair (FR) (TM Fred Texa) finished further half a length behind in third under jockey Christophe Soumillon. H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh Al Thani, presented the trophies to the winners.
